LARP Weapons/costume
Contents
Introduction
One of my many hobbies is that of Live Action RolePlay of which I am mainly involved in the Curious pastimes system. Having looked at the cost of weapons and costume for this when I attended last year, I decided I would try to make my own. Looking online I couldn't find much good info on creating LARP weapons and costumes, so decided to document my activites here to help others.
What to make?
I intend to make the following items
- Armour
- Sword
- Shield
- dagger
- Axe
- Ham
Armour
The armour consists of the following items:
- Plate bodice/corset
- Plate leg and arm shields
- Chainmail skirt
- Helmet of some kind
I still haven't worked out what to do helmet wise.
Sword
Guide to sword making From York uni

- 6mm fibreglass rod 36 inches
- latex to cover
- leather to bind handle
Shield
A circle of thin wood, say 3mm thick, with 12mm foam on front and back. With a 3mm foam rim. No pomel in the middle, leather arm straps on back to hold it. Overal diamentions - 35 Inches in diameter.
- 12mm ld45 or ld60 foam 2x sheets 59x39 inches
- 3mm ld45 foam, 1 sheet 59x39 inches
- circle of 3mm ply wood
- Latex to cover
dagger
Made much the same way as the sword, but I may opt to purchase this as its easier and cheaper than trying to make it.
Axe
Ham
Several layers of 25mm foam stuck together, then sculptured to look like a ham, then painted in latex
- 25mm LD45 or LD60 foam, 1x sheets 59x39 inches

Diary
Febuary 11th 2007
After far to long doing nothing on it, today I resumed work on the chainmail. Added another half inch to the skirt. Am slowly getting there. Hopefully I can get more done in the coming weeks.
March 19th 2006
Have been working alot on the chain mail for the skirt, have decided tdo it as 2 peices initially (front and Back) and then put it together when both are done. As such I have one peice which is 24"x4" and a second 22"x3". For now I am concentrating on getting two peices 15 inches wide, its slow progress, but kinda therapeutic, stick on a dvd, and just knit it all together.
I will hopefully be placing an order in the next week or so for more materials, probably the Metal and foam at this stage.
Febuary 4th 2006
For cost and weight considerations, I bought 20000 5/16th inch ID aluminium rings from The Ring Lord. I have then started making the skirt. So far I have got to about 55 square inches out of a total of about 600 square inches. Its going to be slow, but its proving kinda relaxing.
